Phonics Training Workshop What is phonics? Terminology How we teach phonics The phonics screening check Resources

What is phonics? Phonics is a way of teaching children to read which involves learning the sounds that letters make words. (It is not the same as letter names) c-a-t Children learn sets of sounds and then practice blending them together to read words. They also learn to segment them in order to write words.

Phonics Terminology Phoneme – speech sounds Grapheme – letters that makes the phoneme (sound) (igh, i-e, ie) Blending – Merging the phonemes c-a-t into the word cat READING Segmenting – Taking a spoken word (e.g. him) Identifying the individual sounds h-i-m WRITING Pure sound – the smallest possible sound. ( ‘t’ not ‘tuh’)

Phonics Screening Check The phonics screening check has been introduced by the Department of Education to check the phonics knowledge of children across the country. The check takes place during the month of June.

Phonics Screening Check

Preparing Children for the Phonics Screening Check Our pupils are used to reading to adults and having an adult check their understanding. We do our best to make sure the test is not stressful for the children. We do lots of preparation in class for the test, in the form of our usual phonics work.
