Federal Student Aid 1. You trigger the process by filing out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov and including one or more school codes
Federal Student Aid 2. The school(s) receives a report from the Feds that includes your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), and then: Often requests more documentation (tax transcripts from IRS, etc.) Develops a package of… Grants Loans Work/Study
Need-based grants Pell Grants - Max. $5,730 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity (SEOG) Grant – Max. $4k Teacher Educational Assistance for College & Higher Education (TEACH) Grant – Max. $4k
Federal Loans (you have to pay these back!) Subsidized loans – No interest until you finish or leave school Unsubsidized loans – Interest accumulates while you are enrolled
Federally-funded work/study programs Feds provide money to schools to fund paid part- time positions They pay at least the Federal minimum wage ($7.25) Ideally, positions are related to your college major

Forever G.I. Bill The big news: Your benefits will no longer expire if you are discharged or released from Active Duty after January 1, 2013 BAH rate for stipend now based on where you physically attend a majority of your classes (not location of main campus)
Forever G.I. Bill G.I. Bill benefits you used at a school that shuts down or loses accreditation after January 1, 2015, are restored Any servicemember who earned a Purple Heart, regardless of length of service, is eligible for full GI Bill benefits (More changes on pages 186-189 of manual)
