Separating Mixtures & Solutions Lesson 15

Getting Started Setup Notebook to follow steps in Properties of Matter book:

Getting Started Observations on our cups from Lesson 12

Observations In Lesson 12, students created a copper(II) sulfate solution by dissolving copper (II) sulfate crystals in water. They left it out for a couple of days in a little cup.

Blue Crystals in the Cup Observations Blue Crystals in the Cup #1 in their science notebook: Check off that materials are gathered. #2 in their science notebook: Examine the blue crystals in the cup Blue Crystals Magnified

Blue Crystals in the Cup #3. Questions Blue Crystals in the Cup Answer these questions on #3 in your notebook What do you think this blue substance is? How did the blue substance get there? Where did the water go? Blue Crystals Magnified

#5. Predictions Write down what you think will happen to the crystals when you add 20 mL of water to the cup.

#6. Testing the prediction Students added water and stirred.

#7. Questions Answer these questions #7 in your notebook: What happens after you add 20 mL of water to the blue crystals? What are the properties of the mixture? What do you think you have made?

Notes on Separation Techniques Copy these into Lab 15

Part 1: Separating Mixtures & Solutions Passing Copper (II) sulfate solution and Zinc Oxide mixture through a filter

Worksheet for Part 1 & 2

Part 1 Make a prediction in the “prediction” column for the Copper (II) sulfate solution passing through the filter. Where will the water end up? Where will the copper (II) sulfate end up?

Part 1 Write your observations for where the copper(II) sulfate and water actually ended up in the “Results” column

Part 1 Make a prediction in the “prediction” column for the zinc oxide mixture passing through the filter. Where will the water end up? Where will the zinc oxide end up?

Part 1 Write your observations for where the zinc oxide and water actually ended up in the “Results” column

Added to our notes:

Part 2 Cleaning Rock Salt

Part 2 Put 4 scoops of rock salt into a cup. Make observations on the worksheet Generate a plan to “clean” (separate) the salt from the contaminants.
