WARM UP Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have important similarities and differences. Which of the following is a major difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? A. Eukaryotic are enclosed by membranes while prokaryotic cells are not. B. Prokaryotic cells use DNA while eukaryotic cells do not. C. Eukaryotic have a nucleus while prokaryotic cells do not. D. Prokaryotic cells are filled with cytoplasm while eukaryotic cells are not.

Interactive Journal Left Side Right Side Fill in the chart with the organelles (and their functions) found in prokaryotic, eukaryotic, or both types of cells. Answer the questions below and develop a mnemonic device for the organelles found in both types of cells. The right hand side notes should be printed and given to the students in order for them to properly secure it into their journal. Students will fill out the right side interactive notes as the instructor goes through the notes. At the conclusion of the notes move to the “WE DO” and have the students complete the left hand side chart and answer the questions below. You may need to define, explain, or give an example of a mnemonic device.

Cells There are two categories of cells called prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Despite the many differences between cells, all cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and DNA.

Prokaryotes – The first cells They do not have a membrane-bound nucleus. They have a single, circular chromosome (1) and plasmid DNA (2).

Prokaryotic Cells Prokaryotic cells are structurally simpler than eukaryotic cells. They are small and lack complex organelles. Common example - bacteria

Eukaryotic Cells These cells are distinguished by the presence of a nucleus. The two main types of eukaryotic cells are - ANIMAL PLANT

Eukaryotic Cells Eukaryotic cells are partitioned into functional compartments called organelles for better efficiency. Higher forms of life are composed of more complex, larger eukaryotic cells These cells include protists, fungi, plants, and animals.

Re-Try Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have important similarities and differences. Which of the following is a major difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? a.
