“The Need for Change” Complete a critical reading of the article and complete the assigned activities.

Set up a page of notes (Cornell recommended): Essential Question: According to the author of “The Need for Change”, what change is needed and why?  Number each line of the article. Yes, even if there is only one word on the line it receives a number.  Read the article once and only note vocabulary words that are unfamiliar. Record them in notes.  Read the article again. This time underline important phrases and circle significant terms. 

Discuss your reaction to the article with your group Discuss your reaction to the article with your group. Be prepared to share your reaction in class (later in the session).  Hyper-focus on the lines assigned to your group (below). Write a brief summary, in your own words, that explains the section.   1: 1-7  2: 8-15  3: 16-22  4: 23-29  5: 30-36  6: 36-43  7: 44-50  8: 51-57  9: 58-65  10: 66-71 

As a group: Complete the Sentence Stem:  Line(s) _____ of the article “The Need for Change” is/are _____ to the impact of the article because _____.  Someone from each group, decided by the teacher’s discretion, will share the sentence stem aloud.

At the bottom of the article, write a reflection that includes an understanding of the article’s purpose as well as the reaction it evoked in you as the reader. Predict why the class read this article.  Submit your paper to the blue bin.
