Beta Club & National Honor Society Information 2019-2020 Mrs. Lamb Mrs. Smith Mr. Brooks

Induction Beta: Students with a weighted GPA of 3.3 will be inducted spring semester of freshman year. Once inducted at a weighted GPA of 3.3, your GPA can drop to a weighted 3.0. If it drops below a weighted 3.0, you will be placed on probation for one semester. If the GPA is not back to the required GPA (at least a weighted 3.0) at the end of the semester, you will be dismissed from the club with no future invitation extended. If a student misses out on the opportunity to be invited into the Beta Club during freshmen year, the student could still become eligible 10th grade or 11th grade year. NHS: Consists of 10th – 12th grade students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0. Students will be inducted spring semester. If the GPA drops below an unweighted 3.0, you will be placed on probation for one semester. If the GPA is not back up to the required GPA (unweighted 3.0) at the end of the semester, you will be dismissed from the club with no future invitation. If a student misses the opportunity during the 10th grade year to join, there is still a possibility during the 11th grade year for induction.

Induction will take place in the spring of each year Induction will take place in the spring of each year. Grades from the first semester will be used to compute the scholastic requirements for membership. GPA’s will be checked at the end of the 1st semester grading period, and again at the end of the second semester.

Dues Beta Club: One time fee of $30 NHS: One time fee of $35 Failure to pay dues by the cutoff date will result in the loss of membership This fee includes senior apparel Always pay Mrs. Lamb or Mrs. Smith If you are dismissed, you WILL NOT be given a refund

For all current members!!!!

Hour Requirements Beta: Must have total of 20 community service hours turned in by April 9, 2020 NHS: Must have total of 20 community service hours turned in by April 9, 2020 Beta and NHS: If you are a member of both clubs, you have a responsibility of 30 total hours turned in by April 9, 2020 Do not turn in hour sheets until all hours are completed! All hours are to be turned into Mrs. Lamb (G205) or Mrs. Smith (G202)

Information for hours Hours CANNOT roll over from year to year. Hours should be completed between August 26, 2019 – April 8, 2020. Summer hours will not be included. Volunteer hours CANNOT consist of any activity Monday through Friday (a regular school day) during the hours between 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. It does not matter if you have early dismissal or late arrival, or are absent from school that day. Hours must be earned with a minimum of 3 different organizations. Any work for which you receive pay or any form of compensation or credit is not to be counted toward community service.

Information for hours Continued… Hours sheets must be turned in in hard copy format on the proper paperwork. They will not be accepted late. Do not wait until the last minute. You must complete hours on Mrs. Lamb’s hours forms. Other forms are not acceptable. Forms can be found on the LSHS Beta and NHS webpages and in Mrs. Lamb’s classroom (G205). If you would like your hours reviewed early, with no penalties in case there are problems, you must turn your hours in by the last meeting on March 12, 2020. If you submit them after this date, if there are ANY problems or blank spaces on your forms, you will be dismissed from the club(s) with no future invitation extended. There will be no second chances to fix mistakes. Beta and NHS are both elite organizations that expect their members to be responsible. Be diligent, check your hours sheets several times, and have someone else check them as well before submitting them.

Information for hours Continued… When you go to volunteer somewhere, be prepared and have correct paperwork for adult in charge to sign. Always double check your math before turning in your hours. Always double check your dates and times before turning in your hours. You cannot be in two places at once. Have a calendar with you when filling out the paperwork. There should be no blank lines on your hour’s sheets. Fill in everything! Blanks will get you dismissed from the club(s). Always ask Mrs. Lamb before you volunteer if you are in doubt about being able to count certain hours.

Information for hours Continued… If you sign up for a volunteer event through LSHS Beta Club/NHS, you must attend. If you are not going to make it, you are responsible for finding a reliable replacement AND notifying the person in charge of the event. If you are a no-show for an event and do not find coverage, 5 community service hours will be added to your requirement. When you complete your hours, you must fill out a Volunteer form. Even if you volunteer at a Beta/NHS sponsored event, you MUST still fill out the form! If the proper form is not completely filled out and turned in on time, you will be dismissed from the club(s). You must completely fill out the form, providing all necessary information. All lines should be filled. The adult in charge of the program must also provide a working phone number and signature.

Information for hours Continued… Hours will be checked! Hours WILL NOT be accepted late, no matter the circumstance. If your hours are denied, you will receive a dismissal letter explaining the reason(s) why your hours were not approved. You will have until the deadline (April 9, 2020) to turn them in correctly or you will no longer be a member of the club(s). Hence, it is a very good idea to turn them in EARLY and avoid any problems. If you turn them in by March 12, your hours will be checked early and you will be allowed to revise anything that needs to be fixed. If you wait until the last minute, you will not be afforded that luxury. This means if your hours are incorrect, you will lose your membership. Suggestion: Complete more than the required amount of hours. In case you make a mistake, if you have completed more than the required 20 or 30 hours, this will hopefully save you from dismissal. You have almost 8 months to complete your hours and review your paperwork. There should be zero mistakes.

Community service EXAMPLES: Serving and/or delivering meals to needy, elderly, or shut-ins (Not family) Collecting and delivering Christmas gifts to needy Participating in community and school cleanup/beautification Doing volunteer work or activities in nursing homes, hospitals, public library, elementary school events, animal shelters, etc. Helping with community events (races, fairs, walk-a- thons. etc.) that raise money for specific charities or nonprofit community agencies Working at church-sponsored community outreach events. (Do not count things such as helping in the church nursery during regular Sunday service, singing in church, Judgment Houses, etc.) Tutoring younger students in a subject area Teen Court My Refuge

What not to do for community service hours: Babysitting Doing work around your, a family friend’s, or a relative’s house Working at a job where you get paid Helping teachers with paperwork or cleaning their rooms Attending or participating in various sports/games, required recitals, concerts, etc.

HOURS… Always ask Mrs. Lamb before you volunteer if you are in doubt about being able to count anything not specified on this power point.

Attendance All meetings are mandatory!!! Absences that will be excused WITH A NOTE: 1. Doctor’s appointment – doctor’s note required 2. Game or performance for band, chorus etc. (Not practice!) - note from coach/teacher required 3. Absent from school on meeting day - Note from attendance required NO NOTE WITHIN 5 days OF MEETING = UNEXCUSED ABSENCE! TWO UNEXCUSED ABSENCES = LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP We do not meet but between 6-8 times during the year. The meeting dates are listed on the LHS Beta and NHS calendars. Meetings are also announced a week prior on the morning and afternoon announcements, and through Remind texts. Make plans NOW to attend all meetings. Meetings are immediately after school (3:00 p.m.) in the auditorium unless otherwise specified.

Disciplinary Regulations Members must contain good conduct. Any member caught cheating in any way will be dismissed from the club. (This includes lying on hours forms.) Any member who is suspended, out of school, for any violation will lose membership. DO NOT skip any class in any way, shape, or form. This is an immediate 3 day suspension.

GPA Beta: 3.3 weighted NHS: 3.0 unweighted At the end of the first semester, GPA’s will be checked. They will be checked again at the end of the second semester.

probation The probationary period exists for both Beta and NHS in regards to GPA ONLY. If your GPA drops below the required GPA for either club, you will have until the end of the semester to bring the GPA back up, or you will be dismissed from the club with no future invitation extended. If you do not turn in paperwork/contract on time, if you do not correctly complete your community service hours, if you do not attend enough meetings, and/or if you have any disciplinary issues, you will be dismissed from the club(s) without further invitation extended. No exceptions. There is no probation for these items.

SENIORS Seniors are not eligible to be inducted spring semester before graduation for Beta Club or National Honor Society. Even if your 3rd 9 weeks GPA would finally make you eligible for one of these clubs, there will be no induction for seniors. Once all information has been verified for Seniors (turn in hours early please!), you will receive your cord for Beta and/or stole for NHS. You have already paid for this with your dues. However, it will not be given to you, nor a refund of your money, if you fail to complete all guidelines and are dismissed from the club(s).
