Research informed teaching links at Plymouth Plymouth previously a polytechnic ‘New’ post 1992 institution – ‘teaching intensive’ Established as a successful modern university 23000 students on campus, 13000 off campus 2900 staff

RIT links at Plymouth - HEFCE TQEF Funding (2006) Keeping the curriculum up to date and active Enabling staff to engage with developments in their field and link to developments in their teaching Ensuring that courses are designed in ways that support the development of learning outcomes appropriate to the knowledge economy, including appropriate pedagogy – that is, students experiencing research and developing research skills Embedding research –informed teaching in institutional structures

TQEF funding The UoP received £850,237 over a three year period (2007-10) to fund research informed teaching initiatives Two approaches: Institutional change and enhancing staff capacity to enrich teaching through research

Institutional change Plymouth became first HEI to address RIT links in both research and teaching strategies Research Informed Teaching is a key indicator of excellence in teaching and learning at Plymouth. Students benefit from a rich, research-informed curriculum (TS 2009-2012) To ensure that teaching is underpinned by recent research findings and that students have opportunities to develop and utilise research skills appropriate to their discipline (RS 2009-2012) RiT embedded into PGCAP

Enhancing staff capacity to enrich teaching through research Academics working in the … Used the UoP TQEF initiative to…. Faculty of Health and Social Work Address a dearth of evidence based practice with which to inform student learning.
