“THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE” Lesson 3 for October 20, 2018

Jesus prayed an intercessory prayer for His disciples (and for us) before the Father before His sacrifice. This prayer is known as the High Priestly Prayer. Unity is one of its main topics. Jesus prays for unity. Unity among Jesus and the Father. John 17:1-5 Unity among the disciples. John 17:6-19 Unity among us. John 17:20-26 Unity today. Unity among Christians. Mark 9:38-41 United in love. John 13:34-35

UNITY AMONG JESUS AND THE FATHER “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one.” (John 17:22) Jesus began His prayer with a request to be glorified so the Father could be glorified. How was Jesus glorified? Jesus did the Father’s will by offering Himself in sacrifice for us. That’s how He glorified the Father and was glorified by the Father at the same time. The voluntary sacrifice of Jesus gives us eternal life. And eternal life is that we know God (v. 3). A relationship with God results in unity like the unity among Jesus and the Father. This unity is everlasting.

UNITY AMONG THE DISCIPLES “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.” (John 17:11) Jesus was concerned about his disciples, because they could lose their faith after His departure. Therefore, He asked the Father to take care of them and He asked four more things: That they may be one as the Father and Him (v. 11) That they may rejoice in Him (v. 13) That they may be kept from evil (v. 15) That they may be sanctified by the truth (v. 17) Being united, having joy, staying away from evil and obeying the truth. That’s not something they could achieve by themselves. The Father is the only one who could fulfill that prayer. The result: an effective testimony and the Gospel being spread.

UNITY AMONG US “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:20-21) Jesus was thinking of you before offering Himself as a sacrifice. Jesus had a special desire for us. Jesus wanted us to be united in purpose like Trinity is. That unity will convince the people that Jesus is our Savior. And we will be united forever. Because Jesus that “they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am.” (v. 24)

UNITY AMONG CHRISTIANS “Now John answered Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.’” (Mark 9:38) Is this sentence true? “If someone doesn’t accept the truth we know, he or she is not a true Christian.” We are the prophesied Remnant Church, but that doesn’t make us the only true Christians on Earth. God knows those who are His (2 Timothy 2:19), and He has people who worship Him in every nation [and religion] (Acts 10:34-35). Therefore, we must seek unity with those who believe in the same Savior we do. Unity must be based on common social interest. Unity must not compromise our beliefs. Unity provides the opportunity to share the biblical truths.

UNITED IN LOVE “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35) “Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:14 NLT). Jesus gave us only one commandment, “that you love one another; as I have loved you” (John 13:34; 15:12). Loving one another was not new, but the way to love each other was; loving like Jesus loved us. Jesus wasn’t speaking about a theoretical love, but a practical one: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15). The life of Jesus is an example of obedience, love and self-denial for others’ sake. Our lives must be like His. This love is the bond that generates unity. This unity is the most powerful testimony to make God known in our world.

E.G.W. (The Upward Look, January 17) “Sanctification is to come through the truth; oneness with Christ—this is God’s purpose for us. By their sanctification and their unity, Christians are to give evidence to the world that a perfect work has been done for them, in and through Christ. Thus they are to bear witness that God sent His Son to save sinners. Will you not let Christ carry on this work of sanctification in your hearts? You may all be complete in Him. You have the assurance that through the sanctification of the truth you may be made perfect in one.” E.G.W. (The Upward Look, January 17)
