The Power of Font Why it matters……

Students will understand how to use font and design to better communicate meaning. Lesson Objective

Font

Why do I need to know that? Looking at the parts of the letters/characters helps you to understand the difference between fonts and helps you make a smart choice to effectively communicate meaning. You are using words as art and should understand that there are design principles which can help you think about your selections. Why do I need to know that?

Your mission: first select your word Log on to the computer and open Word Your mission: first select your word

Type your word twice. Print. Compare the two. Select the first one and using the font selection experiment with size- try @ 96 and font style Do the same thing with the second one-but this time try a very different style Print. Compare the two. Discuss with at least one peer. Complete the index card assessment. Turn in both print out of font and index card assessment and your worksheet that goes with the PowerPoint at end of class. Type your word twice.

In class we will use your preferred font print out as the start of your word art. We will reflect back on negative space and look for places where the font style may give opportunities to use negative space in a clever way. Next….
