What is matter made of? Matter is made of elements Elements are the basic building blocks of all matter.

Elements Are pure substances They cannot be broken down into simpler substances. There are 100 known elements that combine to make up all matter. Each element has its own kind of atom.

Atoms Are the smallest unit of an element. Are made up of 3 particles Protons-positive charges Neutrons-neutral Electrons-negative

Atoms All atoms have a nucleus in the center. Inside the nucleus are protons and neutrons. Outside the nucleus are electrons.

Compounds Are any substance that is formed by two or more elements being chemically combined. There are many different compounds because the elements can combine in so many different ways. Examples: Water H2O Salt NaCl Carbon Dioxide CO2

Molecules Are the smallest part of a compound. Contain more than one atom.
