LOCATING PROSPECTIVE UNION MEMBERS: GROUP WORK 1: Mapping of who needs organizing? Why? Time allocated 1 hour

The 1st step The first key step in helping workers to get organized is to have a really detailed picture of where the workers are, their situation, their problems and how this would affect efforts to organize them

WHO NEEDS ORGANISING AND WHY? AIM: To help you think about the workers you want you organize. Task: a)Work in groups b) Think about the workers you want to help organize. c) Draw a picture on a large flip chart. This should show how one of the workers will look like.

Who needs organizing and why? Please map onto you drawing some comments/ideas represented graphically on: Who your worker might be (male/female etc) What problems they have. What skills they have. How they feel about those problems for example, discrimination, poor working conditions, lack of social security, violence at work etc) Why they might have difficulties in getting organised (what might have happened in the past) Whether their working patterns make it difficult to organise (for example home based women whose families will resist them going outside) What level of knowledge they have, including literacy, numeracy. Whether there are any potential leaders amongest them How they might feel about you coming from outside to organise them
