Creative Writing How do authors use narrative techniques to convey a vivid picture of experiences, events, settings, and characters? Agenda Bell Ringer/Discussion Agenda/EQ Dialogue Prompt Formatting Dialogue Rules Sharing Prompts

Dialogue Prompt Using the same situation/characters as our last prompt (Show vs. Tell), create a conversation between two characters. Follow the guidelines of good dialogue Don’t weigh it down with exposition Use it to build towards something Make it sound like a real conversation (without the boring parts) Use it to reveal personality Don’t overuse exclamation Keep dialogue tags simple Make your conversations surprising Try your best to observe the rules you already know for punctuation and spacing. We will be discussing these ideas tomorrow (so have your conversations ready) Keep it between 1 page and 1 page front and back

Formatting Dialogue Rules Read rules together Complete the exercise on the back of the rules Read through your own writing Fix errors on original draft Re-write with correct spacing and punctuation Re-read to catch any remaining errors

Dialogue Check Was it weighed down with exposition? Did it build towards something? Did it sound like a real conversation (without the boring parts)? Did it reveal personality? Did it overuse exclamation? Did it use simple dialogue tags, gesture, and action? Was the conversation surprising?
