Composition and organic components in the northern hemisphere HOA: mostly fossil combustion like traffic OOA: mostly secondary Other OA: e.g. wood burning, cooking Data are based on campaigns of 3-5 weeks Jimenez, Prevot et al., Science, 2009

Campaign Averages: Absolute composition of NR-PM1 Nemitz et al., in prep. (* Data not yet available)

EMEP campaigns – ACTRIS ACSM year EMEP campaign Summer June 8 – July 17 2012 EMEP campaign Winter January 15-February 15 2013 (still tentative) ACTRIS ACSM year : June 2012 – May 2013 (prolonged on voluntary basis) 10-11 May 2012: Preparatory meeting for the ACSM users at PSI, Switzerland

ACTRIS year + EMEP campaign Official ACTRIS Will be operational later, probably in autumn

EMEP - ACTRIS For the measurements of aerosol chemical composition and the assessment of OM sources/components for longer time periods, ACSM seems to be a very good tool The combination of the ACSM with the multi-wavelength light absorption meas is recommendable to provide source apportionment of BC as well In the future PM2.5 instead of PM1 will be possible Value of monthly campaigns enhanced if embedded in one-year long ACSM measurements Analyses will include comparison to off-line measurements, gasphase measurements, trajectory analyses, model evaluations… and, and, and

HOPEFULLY MORE ACSMs ACROSS EUROPE Later Future HOPEFULLY MORE ACSMs ACROSS EUROPE GOAL: SET UP REGULAR MEETINGS AND EVALUATION OF ACSM DATA IN A EUROPEAN CONTEXT OVER THE NEXT DECADE Possible Extension of AMS analyses to stations without ACSM in the future: Offline analyses are possible with the AMS (It is worth to freeze filters (best quartz filters) because they could be analyzed afterwards by AMS)
