World War II

MAKE THE CONNECTION The Treaty of Versailles Germany gets the screw job Germany hates the treaty Loss of Money, Army, Land, Pride Reparations make Germany broke, THE GREAT DEPRESSION!!! (Unemployment, Poverty) Poor/ashamed/starving, Germans look for a solution They lose faith in Weimar and try to replace it with “something that works”

The First Steps Hitler builds up military! March 9, 1935 Hitler announced the creation of a new air force A week later he began a military draft that expanded army from 100,000 to 550,000 Both violated the Treaty of Versailles!

Rhineland 1936 The Treaty of Versailles made this a demilitarized zone. Hitler thought Western states would not use force to maintain the Treaty… He was Right!

Austria, 1938

Sudetenland 1938 (land in Czechoslovakia that was largely German)

Czechoslovakia 1939

Poland Attacked:1939 All these violated the Treaty of Versailles Blitzkrieg [“Lightening War”]

APPEASEMENT (Warm Up) Europe gave into Hitler’s demands for territory, so Germany would be happy, and peace would be achieved. Baby cries until it gets a cookie…cries until it gets a toy… Basically looking the other way and avoiding conflict…sissiees

Appeasement: The Munich Agreement, 1938 British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain Now we have “peace in our time!” Herr Hitler is a man we can do business with.

Britain, United States, Russia Allies 1945 The Tripartite Pact

Italy-Germany-Japan Axis, 1940 The Tripartite Pact

The Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, 1939 G&R promise not to attack each other, and would later divide Europe between each other. Does Hitler break promises? Foreign Ministers von Ribbentrop & Molotov

Russia does not fight back, or get worried (Part of the Pact) Poland Attacked: 1939 Russia does not fight back, or get worried (Part of the Pact)

France – False Sense of Security? The Maginot Line Obstacles created after WWI between France and Germany Act as barrier

France – False Sense of Security? The Line fails

France Surrenders 1940 Most of French army defending the Maginot Line Blitzkrieg No other Ally comes to help

Now Britain Is All Alone!

The Battle of Britain 1940 G.B. was only real threat so Hitler started bombing. First he bombed military & industrial centers Unsuccessful, so bombed cities, hoping G.B. would surrender……well they didn’t.

Battle of Britain: The “Blitz”

Volunteers help lookout for attacks and rescue those in need. Battle of Britain: The “Blitz” Volunteers help lookout for attacks and rescue those in need.

People hide from bombs in Shelters/Subways

Lend-Lease Act The United States Lends Money/Supplies to the Allies. Want to stay neutral, at the same time wanted to prevent the spread of Nazism

The Atlantic Charter treaty of friendship 1941. Two “Big Boys” unite. Gets more countries involved.

Hitler’s Biggest Mistake Mein Kampf- Hitler’s book Russia had Slavic people so Hitler treated as inferior.

Hitler’s Biggest Mistake Hitler betrays Stalin and goes back on his Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact All Hitlers promises in Appeasement discreditied . Russia is T.O.!

Operation Barbarossa: June 22, 1941 3,000,000 German soldiers. 3,400 tanks.
