The Prophet Amos
Amos was from Tekoa, south of Jerusalem He was a Shepherd and he kept fig trees ISRAEL JUDAH
At the time Amos lived There were some very rich people The rich didn’t care about the poor They let the poor go hungry and made them homeless when they could not pay their rent They spent money on themselves Do you think this was right?
In his heart Amos thought God was calling him to help the people In his heart Amos thought God was calling him to help the people. But Amos said “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs.” (Amos 7:34) Amos didn’t want to get involved but in the end he knew he had to help
Amos goes to help Amos showed the people a plumb line A plumb line is still used today to see if things are straight Amos said that people were not keeping to the straight and narrow. They were not doing what God wanted
Amos told the People The poor are part of God’s family You must look after others and treat people fairly You must share what you have If you don’t the world will be a very unhappy place and things will get worse
Amos told people Seek the Lord that you may live (5:6) Seek good and not evil, that you may live (5:14) Was Amos right? Should we take care of the poor? What can we do today to help others?
