Natural Resources

Energy Resources What are the main sources of nonrenewable energy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of nonrenewable energy resources? How can individuals help manage nonrenewable resources wisely?

Sources of Energy Nonrenewable resources – resources that are used faster than they can be replaced by natural processes. Renewable resources – resources that can be replaced by natural processes in a relatively short amount of time.

Nonrenewable Energy Resources Fossil Fuels – coal, oil and natural gas Form over millions of years Todays formed from the remains of prehistoric organisms millions of years ago. Buried under sediment and changed chemically by extreme temperature and pressure.

Type of Fossil Fuels Formed Type of organic matter Temperature and pressure Length of time that the organic matter was buried

Oil and Natural Gas

Advantages of Fossil Fuels 1. 2. 3. 4.

Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels Limited Supply Habitat Disruption Pollution

Nuclear Energy Energy released from atomic reactions. Advantages Disadvantages Nuclear Energy
