Definition: “quality of teaching” Content: amount and actuality Teacher: professional competence and didactic skills Organisational framework: date/time, course-book, previous information …. How feels the student during the course How feels the student after having completed the course How useful is the course for further development (point of view: formal student, employer)

University management is asked to…. … find indicators for these quality criteria … count and measure (including statistical analysis) … compare the data with ?? (previous year, internal competitors, external benchmarks) … show reaction on the results (Follow up strategies)

Austrian Universities: situation today Count/measure: we are experts in counting ! – Even when we do not know what. Indicators: hundreds ! Are they really efficient to measure quality ? Compare: mostly internal, system with external partners is improving Weakness: consequences. Influence on teachers is limited depending on their contract situation. young – middle aged – elder – external
