Astrocytes Supply Presynaptic Terminals with a Sweet Incentive to Make Connections  Giuseppe Condomitti, Joris de Wit  Developmental Cell  Volume 43, Issue 3, Pages 261-263 (November 2017) DOI: 10.1016/j.devcel.2017.10.018 Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Astrocyte-Secreted GPC4 Induces Presynaptic NP1 Release and Active Synapse Formation The proteoglycan GPC4, released from the astrocytic surface by an unknown mechanism, binds presynaptic RPTPδ, likely via its heparan sulfate sugar chains. GPC4-bound RPTPδ activates an unidentified signaling pathway leading to the release of NP1, which clusters postsynaptic AMPARs and promotes the development of active synapses.
