Parent Meeting Class of 2014 November 15, 2011

Our Purpose At Walker Valley we believe that we work in cooperation with the student and the parent in order to form a partnership that will benefit each student. Our goal is to see each student graduate from Walker Valley with a solid educational foundation under their feet.

The Future The ultimate goal for each student is high school graduation. High school is one step in life we must work to prepare your child for life after high school. The way we look at education and why we need to make changes in the way educational services are delivered is important. Jobs of the future will require more than a high school diploma.

What Lies Ahead

Academics At this time your child should have at least 6 - 8 credits. If they have less than this they put themselves in danger of not being able to graduate on time with their class. How to Graduate with an Honors Diploma: Students who score at or above all of the subject area readiness benchmarks on the ACT (or equivalent score on the SAT) will graduate with honors. ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores: English – 18 Mathematics – 22 Reading – 21 Science – 24 College Readiness Benchmark Scores for the ACT represent median test scores that are predictive of student success in relevant college courses. “Success” is defined as a 50 percent or higher probability of earning a B or higher in the corresponding college course or courses.

Credit Recovery Availability They are required to have 28 credits to graduate. If they are not at this point they may be eligible for Credit Recovery if they have a failing grade of 60 – 69 and the recommendation of their teacher. Credit Recovery is available only in the core areas. Credit Recovery meets Tuesday – Friday 7:15 – 8:10 Monday /Tuesday/Thursday 3:35 – 5:00 Monday/Tuesday/Thursday during One hour Lunch Learning Lab CL2

Tutoring Math Tutoring Mr. Varner B210 Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 – 4:30 Geometry, Algebra 2 Ms. Rafoss G212 Monday/Wednesday Algebra 1

Tutoring Continued English Tutoring Ms. Wielfaert B 107 Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday 7:20 Wednesday and Thursday 3:40 – 5:00 Science Tutoring Mr. Swafford B205 Tuesday – Friday 7:40 A.M.

What To Do Your child should check with their counselor to check their credit situation. They should check to see if there is an opportunity for Credit Recovery. If this is not an option they should be checking for opportunities to make up the class.

The Facts 80 Students in the 10th Grade failed a course 17 failed a needed Math course 54 failed a needed Science course 4 failed an English course 23 failed a Foreign Language Also 171 Sophomores made the Honor Roll

It is not too late Students must dig in and ask for help Teachers are available for tutoring before school, after school and during lunch. It will take hard work on the part of the student in conjunction with asking for help from their teachers. In order to help you keep up we established a Parent Portal for you to check grades and attendance. If you are unsure of your username and/or password, please contact Patty Phillips at Bradley County Schools Central Office at 476-0620.

What is our purpose? We want to give your child every opportunity to graduate. We want to communicate with you on a regular basis. Please watch our website www.walkervalleyhigh.com daily for announcements etc.

Now is the Time Begin looking at college choices based on what your child wishes to major in – look for the best program for them. Begin looking at information the college requires and when it is due so it will not slip up on you. Be academically prepared. Look at the future, check out the career your child is interested in and find out what it takes to for that to be a career choice.

Important Things To Remember Be involved with their registration for their junior year, their choice of college, their choice of career and their choice of friends. Keep up with their grades on the Parent Portal Do not let students think of taking their senior year off challenge them to work hard. Keep in touch with their teachers. Watch our website there is important information on there for you.

Just Because They are in high school don’t assume they are mature They are in high school don’t assume they don’t need our help They are in high school don’t assume we won’t call you we will They are in high school don’t assume they will let you know everything that is going on PLEASE STAY INVOLVED WITH THEM
