January 2005 doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2009 Abstract This presentation discusses the future of the IEEE 802.11 JTC1 Ad Hoc Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation Dorothy Stanley, Agere Systems

Topics Why am I “retiring”? May 2009 Topics Why am I “retiring”? Why is engagement with ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6 important? Responsibilities Requirements for the JTC1 Chair On-going support Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation

May 2009 Why am I “Retiring”? My employer wants me to focus on internal projects I plan to stop regularly attending 802.11 after 10 years of service to the group as Editor Chair Liaison Worker Bee Gadfly I committed to serving until 802.11w completes And it will complete soon Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation

Why Engage with ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6? May 2009 Why Engage with ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6? ISO branding a requirement for procurement in many international market segments ISO has proven an important tool for extending the IEEE 802.11 brand WTO rules require signatories to allow deployment of international standards IEEE 802.11 is not “legally” an international standard But ISO/IEC 8802-11 is Much work remains to protect and extend our brand within ISO/IEC Call to Action: The 802.11 WG needs a chair to facilitate this work Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation

JTC1 Ad Hoc Chair Responsibilities January 2005 doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2009 JTC1 Ad Hoc Chair Responsibilities Convene JTC1 Ad Hoc meetings and draw up its program of work Drive WG and 802 positions on SC6 actions affecting 802.11 and 802 more generally Establish how 802.11 will engage with SC6: in person? via e-mail? Help decide whether to change the format: Remain an ad hoc? Become a standing committee? Task group? Dissolve? When and how often to meet? Participate in dialog with 802 ExCom Because the IEEE 802 LMSC holds the liaison to SC6, not 802.11 Participate in dialog with IEEE staff Communicate documents and positions between 802.11 and SC6 Recruit participants to SC6 activities Travel to SC6 meetings, when possible Participation in his/her country’s SC6 process if possible Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation Dorothy Stanley, Agere Systems

Requirements Willing to lead May 2009 Requirements Willing to lead Willing to work hard to benefit the world-wide community of LAN developers, vendors, and users Commitment to lead the group for 2 SC6 meetings (About 18 months) Find participants to support our SC6 involvement Willing to listen to the WG membership, ExComm, IEEE Staff, SC6 National Bodies, ITTF staff Willing to persuade Technical domain expertise in security nice to have because of the WAPI debate Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation

January 2005 doc.: IEEE 802.11-yy/xxxxr0 May 2009 On-Going Support The Ad Hoc has a hard-working core of knowledgeable and dedicated members Although the Tokyo SC6 meeting will be my last, I will be available for Personal introductions Mentoring Advice Education on ISO processes Jesse Walker, Intel Corporation Dorothy Stanley, Agere Systems
