Figure 1 ENaC is activated by proteolytic cleavage. ENaC is cleaved by furin twice in the α subunit and once in the γ subunit. The β subunit is not cleaved. ENaC is activated and is probably cleaved by other proteases, such as prostasin, that are inhibited by protease nexin-1 (PN-1).
