Whatever it takes ……for our families to love books Marriott Primary Whatever it takes ……for our families to love books

The challenges we face Developing a child’s interest in books Lack of books at home Parents willingness to do their best but not necessarily knowing what to do Engaging parents in family learning Developing our sense of community The world of the Xbox, DS, Wii, PS3

What did we identify as our priorities Engagement of boys reading TAs – reading coach training Siblings supporting each other with reading Collaborative family learning project with local schools focusing on F2 and Y1 parents On – line home reading activities Linked into extended services project – Y3/4 comic writing

Siblings Reading Club Involves children in Y3, 4 and 5 and their siblings across the whole school Once a week they meet for 20mins at lunch, they choose ‘real’ books for the older child to read to their sibling After every3 occasions they select a book for home

Sometimes it’s just nice to relax and read together When you get to take your book home, I can even read it to myself in bed Sometimes it’s just nice to relax and read together I get to spend time with my sister and improve my reading It helps me to use words in my work.. It’s fun to teach my sister to read better

My favourite moments Children stumbling over the heads of others in assembly to get their reward, with a huge grin on their face After picking the book ‘How to be good’ the child said “ I thought there might be some ideas for my Mum” The awe when children see the books being awarded Children’s quick recognition of authors Best quote from a parent “ He keeps them under his mattress because they are his treasures”

Family Learning in F2 and Y1 Led by class teacher and Reading Recovery teacher – parents enticed by food 5 sessions ran for each year group focusing on: Why we read to children How to share a book – reading aloud Things to pick out in a book Letters and sounds and how to say them

One thing we discovered

What is Bug Club E books that are book banded for a child to read at home Each child has their own log in Easily set up in school for home usage Internet facility on the computer, ds, PS3 etc will allow access

The book content will feature some well-known characters and brands

An audio option will read Read books on screen An audio option will read book aloud Quizzes and questions Always access books Previously read

What did Parents think? You know what questions to ask I can make a book sound interesting He loves the Book Bugs. He wants more I know now how to say the letter sounds. I want to know more We look forward to the celebration

Comic Writing 4 local schools worked collaboratively together with Ian Brurley and In our school boys in Y3/4 contributed their ideas to the creation of a character incorporating the theme of reading
