Find your assigned seat! Make sure that your Student Info Sheet (front AND back) is complete. Keep it with you until you receive a textbook (tomorrow), so that you may write your textbook number on the sheet. Then, turn in the sheet. Thanks!

Ch 1: Exploring Life Get a textbook from the cabinet & write your name inside the front cover. Place your book number on the appropriate line on the student info sheet. If completed, turn in student info sheet in the tray by the door.

Ch 1: Exploring Life 1. What is the hierarchy of life? (smallest to largest) 2. What is the scientific method? 3. Good Experimental Design

A preliminary study testing the effectiveness of a colon cancer chemotherapy drug was implemented on mice at Wake Forest University. Over a period of 6 weeks, mice were split into seven equal groups. One group was given a placebo, while the other six groups were given incrementally increasing dosages of the drug. Initial measurements of tumor mass at Day 0 were then compared to measurements of tumor mass at day 42 in order to determine % shrinkage (or growth) of tumor from the original size.

Good Experimental Design Ch 1: Exploring Life Good Experimental Design Hypothesis Independent (cause) & dependent (effect) variables Control group & experimental groups  Placebo  Receive chemotherapy (in different dosage) Constants – same environment, time, amt. of food, 1 pill/wk. Control – mice given no chemotherapy drug Random sampling Large sample size (n) Repeated – multiple trials Graphs Title your graph & label axes w/ units Keep same scale Start at X & Y vertex Connect dots Key – if more than one line
