Sending data to EUROSTAT using STATEL and STADIUM web client 8/29/2019 Sending data to EUROSTAT using STATEL and STADIUM web client Introduction STATEL STADIUM STADIUM web client 03/02/2003

The problem The needs The solution Introduction 8/29/2019 Introduction The problem the collection of statistical data at Eurostat The needs Accelerate the collection process Control the data during transmission Have a follow-up utility for Eurostat The solution Send data using STATEL and STADIUM web client 03/02/2003

The collection of statistical data at Eurostat 8/29/2019 The collection of statistical data at Eurostat From anywhere To the right Eurostat server Quickly and in time, Store, complete, with “some pre-validation” services Follow-up, Monitoring EUROSTAT servers 03/02/2003

Old methods: floppy disk, tape, fax… Internet mail 8/29/2019 Old methods: floppy disk, tape, fax… Internet mail Manually: using mailer program Automatic process FTP Using GUI STATEL: transport layer (STATEL: STAtistics & TELecommunications) STADIUM: formalise data collection and distribution 03/02/2003

STATEL overview STATEL concept Application Programming Interface (API) 8/29/2019 STATEL overview STATEL concept Application Programming Interface (API) Strictly symmetric peer to peer relationship The two parts (local and remote: the tuple) are equivalent Every file operation is made at one side Kept on a local file system Transferred to the other part of the tuple using the configured telecomms. The transfer unit is the PDU 03/02/2003

Full-featured data transmission Security and reliability 8/29/2019 STATEL overview Full-featured data transmission Bi-directional, symmetric data transmission services Hierarchical directory structure Security and reliability Guaranteed delivery Permanent encryption Password security for individual files Standards based To achieve maximum portability and minimum impact on existing facilities, STATEL is fully standards based. The protocols supported by STATEL are ISO, IEFT, or industry standards such as X.400, FTP and SMTP. STATEL is written in ISO-standard 'C', and compiles on most versions of UNIX and Microsoft Windows. 03/02/2003

STATEL services Multi-protocol: Secure Reliable 8/29/2019 STATEL services Multi-protocol: STATEL supports most common communications facilities (synchronous and asynchronous) and uses already installed components of the operating system (e.g. Windows sockets, FTP, SMTP - POP3 ...) Secure data are encrypted Reliable STATEL keeps track of transmitted data and re-transmits missing data as soon as a gap is detected. If a previous connection failed, STATEL will automatically retry the file transmission. STATEL is an API (Application Programming Interface) The development toolkit is available and documented. It allows development of applications with transparent telecommunication layer. 03/02/2003

STATEL services Comes with a set of tools Explorer Installer program 8/29/2019 STATEL services Comes with a set of tools Explorer allows file manipulation in the VFS user configurable Installer program The Hub allows several STATEL workstations to combine and manage the traffic to and from the remote parties The ISMS (Integrated STATEL Management System) collects needed information from various production machines (such as log file, system status...) stores collected information in a mysql DB provides a convenient and quick way to monitor traffic on STATEL network from a web browser 03/02/2003

Transport: possible architectures Standalone One PC which connects directly to the STATEL gateway With the Hub Several PCs which connect to the hub Transfer at the LAN speed With the STADIUM Web Client As standalone or with the hub 03/02/2003

Where to Get More Information On the web http://www.statel.net (software and documentation) From the Help Desk estat-support-statel@cec.eu.int Level 1 Software usage and installation Level 2 proactive support handle more complex problems 03/02/2003

Data collection services STADIUM client standalone: still used STADIUM web client Local server application Data sending from the intranet web Central collection point in the NSIs Easier administration Better control STATEL lite (STATEL over http) STATEL Explorer to send GESMES messages Genedi Tool provided by Eurostat Generate Gesmes message Interfaced with STATEL 03/02/2003

STADIUM application A solution provided by Eurostat which performs electronic data collection. STADIUM performs Data collection and formalisation of data sending Data reception and distribution inside Eurostat No Client/Server mechanism Although the terms client and server are often used to refer to the various parts of the system Merely Data collection point Central data handling system 03/02/2003

Server – client comparison STADIUM Server central side: data handling tool Data handling Reception (Validation) Backup Forwarding Automated and transparent distribution Follow-up Reports generation STADIUM Client NSI side: collection tool Entry point to the EDI world (pre-EDI) Easy integration into the administration telecommunication strategy GUI windows application Full follow-up mechanism Maintain a local DB Report generation 03/02/2003

The STADIUM web client (SWC) Web application developed in Java A graphical Web user interface Multi user application Does not need any software installation on the sender’s PC Fully compatible with both Netscape and Internet Explorer - Generic architecture supporting any type of files exchange - Support for STATEL - Modular architecture design, enabling “plug-in” - Automatic encryption (future) - Automatic data compression (future) 03/02/2003

Is a collection and distribution mechanism Available on Unix (Solaris) The STADIUM server Is a collection and distribution mechanism Available on Unix (Solaris) Components: Collection of programs Uses an Oracle DB Coldfusion server Configuration web interface Monitoring web interface 03/02/2003
