Human Impact & the Environment

Human Activities and Impact on the Environment Threat Causes Possible Results Greenhouse Effect Acid Rain Ozone Depletion Air Pollution Water Pollution Soil Depletion Habitat destruction Make a chart like this with room to write in. Fill in as I discuss the notes

Human Activities and Impact on the Environment Greenhouse Effect- Causes- by burning of fossil fuels and loss of forests increasing the amount of trapped atmospheric gases. Possible Results- Changes in climate, melting of polar ice caps, drought and flooding

Acid Rain Causes- Burning fossil fuels releases sulfur into the air making it more acidic. Possible Results- acid rain can destroy forests, poison lakes and kill wildlife. It can also erode statues and buildings.

Ozone Depletion Causes- Use of certain compounds like CFCs that destroy the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. The ozone layer blocks UV rays from the Earth. Possible Results- Higher cases of skin cancer and possible mutations in organisms.

Air Pollution Causes- Burning fossil fuels, wood, releases chemicals into the air. Possible results- Increase in breathing problems and illness in humans and other organisms

Water Pollution Causes- Waste, trash, heat, chemicals etc. contaminating rivers, lakes and oceans. Results- Threat to species that live in or near water, less clean water for drinking , farming etc.

Soil Depletion Causes- Soil erosion, overuse of soil, and pesticides threaten the quality and quantity of soil. Results- Threat to agriculture, organisms that live in soil.

Habitat Destruction Causes- Poisoning of lakes, deforestation, urban development Possible Results- Threatens or destroys the species habitat and upsets balance of nature
