the evolution of our space model Early Astronomers the evolution of our space model

Geocentric model (1) Earth centered universe Earth is the center of the solar system Stars rotate around the Earth.

Earth centered model Earth

Aristotle (2) Grandfather of science Used observation based science. Did experiments to study scientifically. So respected his wrong ideas were taught.

Star trails

Ptolemy (3) Astronomer and mathematician Published ideas in books. He “made” the math work for the geocentric model.

Heliocentric model (4) Sun centered universe. Planets are in orbits around the Sun. Stars are distant and do not move.

Copernicus (5) Brought heliocentrism to the Renaissance Used scientific observation. Discovered Earth rotates on its own axis His followers were called Copernicans

Sun centered model Copernicus’s diagram Sun

Galileo (6) Built a telescope to prove Copernican model correct. Forced to admit wrong-doing by the Church Although locked away for life, his ideas were shared in books
