Figure 1 Working Model for Colonization Resistance in Neonatal Mice Commensal Clostridia provide colonization resistance to pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae, like Citrobacter rodentium and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. Colonization of protective Clostridia is increased in the presence of succinate, which is abundant when Bacteroides colonize the gut.
