8X 3-6-2015 Objectives: Describe political, social, and intellectual developments in the United States during the 1920s. Agenda: Do now: How it Feels to be Colored Me (in do now tray) Notes and discussion on 24.2 together as a class. Ultimate Guide to the Presidents: Changing of the Guard Begin 24.3

24.2: Life During the 1920s Young people had a lot of independence: education, moved to cities and got their own jobs instead of following their parents’ jobs or working in family farms (creates individualism and identity), when men got back from WWI – they saw different cultures and wanted to continue experiencing new ideas and new activities. free time: Moving assembly line and other innovations made work easier, less time at work from labor laws, so now people have more time  BIG ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY – dancing, clubs, sports, movies, literature, arts. Progressive Age created better working conditions. Less hours for work, more energy and time for leisure, and family time More time and money for education (from the industrial revolution) People were testing limits and boundaries -> women’s rights, race boundaries being pushed PROHIBITION: people weren’t following the laws, alcohol kept being sold illegally. Government found it impossible to enforce. Power to gangsters. Lots of crime. Religion: pg 762 – Fundamentalism – Strict interpretation of the Bible. Scopes Trial – should evolution be taught in school?
