This includes: Agribusiness/farm management Food, forest and fiber production - their bi-product utilization Agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals ACCORDING TO THE AGRIBUSINESS COUNCIL OF AMERICA, AGRIBUSINESS IS A BROAD TERM WHICH EMCOMPASSES ALL ASPECTS OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND DISTRIBUTION. An operation with one or more horses, Christmas tree farms and farms that were wholly enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program were included in the Census farm count. OUTPUT BY SEGMENT Examples of Output Segments Beverage Mfg.: Anheuser-Busch – Fortune 500 Company – ag research for new strains of barley, rice, etc. Owns and operates barley elevators and barley processing plants. Ag Inputs: Monsanto Company – Fortune 500 Company – Ag products include Seed, Insect and Weed Control and Biotechnology. Also has a Lawn and Garden business. Pet Food Mfg.: Nestle-Purina Petcare Co. – World’s largest petcare mfg. Also operates Purina Farms and feed for specialty livestock. Food Mfg.: Includes bakery products, pastas, meat processing, milk and dairy, sugar and confectionery. Production Ag: Includes corn, soybeans, nursery’s, greenhouses, hogs, dairy, beef cattle, fruits, vegetables, poultry and eggs, specialty crops (such as Christmas Trees), specialty livestock (such as goats, exotic animals) Ag Biotech: Life and Plants Sciences “cluster” which includes – drugs, industrial chemicals, research, development, education and testing. St. Louis is now being called the “BioBelt” because so many biotech companies are in the bi-state region.
