EAC SQMT Act, 2006 In 2006 the East African Community enacted the East African Community Standardization, Quality Assurance, Metrology, and Testing Act (EAC SQMT Act,2006) The purpose of the act is to: make provision for ensuring standardization, quality assurance, metrology and testing of products produced or traded in the Community in order to facilitate industrial development and trade

Harmonization of Standards There are currently 80 technical committees (TCs). More than 1,200 standards have been harmonized to date, covering most sectors apart from pharmaceuticals. Conformity assessment procedures have been harmonized with recognition of partner state quality marks.

Benefits of Harmonization Sharing of information and dealing with Technical barriers to Trade (TBTs) issues is done in a more coordinated way. Number of TBTs being reported has reduced significantly in the harmonized system Reduction of delays at the points of entry. Significant growth of trade in the region.
