Photosynthesis & CR EQ: How is energy acquired and used by organisms? Identify the reactants, products, and basic functions of photosynthesis. EQ: How is energy acquired and used by organisms?

Meet Penny… Penny is Claudel's best friend What kinds of cells are Penny and Claudel? What are the three things Penny has that Claudel does not have? Why?

plant cells animal cells

Plants are energy producers Like animals, plants need energy to live unlike animals, plants don’t need to eat food to make that energy Plants make both FOOD & ENERGY

How do plants make energy & food? Plants use the energy from the sun to make ATP energy and sugars (glucose, sucrose, cellulose, & more) sun ATP sugars

Photosynthesis A process where light energy is captured and used to build SUGARS from carbon dioxide and water Occurs in the Chloroplasts

REVIEW!!!! Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction.. What are the parts of a chemical reaction? Reactant- goes in Products – comes out

Photosynthesis Equation  glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide sun energy + water + (ATP) = used to build the sugar 6CO2 6H2O C6H12O6 6O2 sun energy  + What are the reactants? Box them What are the products? Circle them Co2, H2O, sunlight C6H12O6, O2

Chloroplast Sunlight Thykaloid Chlorophyll Light dependent Oxygen Water ATP Energy Light independent Sugar ATP Carbon Dioxide

Light- Dependent & Independent Reactions: Light- Dependent reactions Chlorophyll in the thylakoid absorbs energy from sunlight Water molecules taken in from the roots are broken down and Oxygen is released Light- Independent reactions No sunlight energy required Uses ATP from the light dependent reaction and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) absorbed through the leaf and to produce sugar

What do plants need to grow? Location of Photosynthesis: chloroplast Fuels: sunlight carbon dioxide water The Helpers: enzymes Products: Oxygen sugar Make ATP! Make sugar! I can do it all… And no one even notices! sun CO2 ATP enzymes sugars H2O

What Affects the rate of photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction Photosynthesis has help from enzymes… What factors affect enzyme activity? Temp, pH, & concentration What factor can affect the rate of photosynthesis? TEMPERATURE!!! ………..Closer to the optimum temperature, rate of photosynthesis increases due to enzymes!

So what does a plant need? Bring In (reactants) Energy Light from the sun (leaves) CO2 from the air (leaves) H2O from the ground (roots) Lets Out (products) O2 (escapes from the leaves) Sugars (food for the plant) Review: How does the water get from the roots of the plant to the leaves of the plant for photosynthesis? 6CO2 6H2O C6H12O6 6O2 light energy  +

QKA- in your notebook (pg 35) The 'light-dependent reactions', or light reactions, are the first stage of photosynthesis, the process by which plants capture and store energy from sunlight. The light- dependent reactions take place on the thylakoid membrane inside a chloroplast. The inside of the thylakoid membrane is called the lumen, and outside the thylakoid membrane is the stroma, where the light-independent reactions take place. The synthesis of carbohydrates occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts. This process uses what reactants to create carbohydrates? H2O & CO2 C. C6H12O6 CO2 & O2 D. O2

QKA- on the right side of your notebook (pg 35) According to the graph, what is the best explanation for the relationship between temperature and the rate of photosynthesis? As the temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis continually increases As the temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis continually decreases As the temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis stays the same. As temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis increases and then decreases.

How would photosynthesis be affected if….. There was a drought… There were less hours of sunlight than normal…. The carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere dropped… Drastic change in temperature…

One plant says to another, “Are you hungry One plant says to another, “Are you hungry?”… The other replies, “I could use a light snack.”
