Sponge: Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 37 Topic: 12 Sponge: Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 37 Topic: 12.1 Sensory Receptors Essential Question: Compare and Contrast the different types of receptors. Text: 442 12.1 Sensory Receptors 2.1 Atoms, Ions, and Molecules Compare and Contrast the different types of receptors.
OBJECTIVE SWBAT differentiate the differences between the different types of receptors by using information from the powerpoint and activity
Sensory Receptors Sensory Receptors: specialized cells or multicellular structures that collect information from the environment Link our nervous system to the outside environment
Let’s do the first one together! Chemoreceptors: Chemo – Chemical Chemoreceptor: Receptor that responds to chemical signals Taste Smell
Now it’s your turn! As a table group, work on the Intro to Receptors WS. ~20min
Mechanoreceptors Mechano: Mechanical Mechanoreceptors: Receptors that respond to Mechanical forces (deformed receptors) Touch/hearing Proprioceptors: Sense changes in the tension of muscles and tendons Baroceptors: Sense changes in blood pressure Stretch Receptors: Sense changes in inflation (lungs)
Nociceptors Noci: Injury/Harm/Pain Nociceptor: Receptors that respond to Injury/Harm/Pain Ex: Mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical energy Touch
Photoreceptor Photo: Light Photoreceptor: Receptors that responds to light intensity Vision
Thermoreceptor Thermo: Temperature Thermoreceptor: Receptors that respond to temperature Touch
Table Talk! Discuss with your table: What is the commonality between all 5 receptor types? THEY ALL RESPOND TO CHANGE
Sensory Receptors Each receptor is sensitive to a DISTINCT kind of environmental CHANGE and less sensitive to other. Ex: Thermoreceptors respond to temperature, not light BUT…….on certain occasions, they may respond to other stimuli if the stimulus is strong enough Ex: Nociceptors can be stimulated from intense heat or intense cold. Ex: Seeing “stars” from sharp blow to the head
