Developing your Teaching Practice through Goal Setting The Institute for Learning and Teaching - TILT

Session Outcomes Participants will… Align the sample goal setting form with the SMART goal process Select a domain on the Framework that will help you grow your teaching practice Write a teaching goal/or revise an existing goal using the SMART goal process Recognize that goal setting can be an integral part of improving teaching

[Tonya] Introduction to goal setting in teaching - Briefly discuss growth mindset, reflection in teaching - students change, content changes, we change along with it…. You are all here for a reason.. you aren’t forced to be here. etc. What that tells us in TILT is that you want to grow as a teacher…. -because you showed up here today, that tells us that you are already reflecting on your teaching and that we don’t have to convince you that you need to improve. We already know that you want to improve.

Realistic/Relevant/Rigorou s Time-bound Reflect... Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic/Relevant/Rigorou s Time-bound Talk with a partner about a goal you have accomplished in your life. It can be as simple as “I learned to make lasagna” or “I finally made it to Spain” or more complicated, “I built my dream house.” [Tonya] Objective: Reflect upon a past accomplished goal to assess if it was a SMART goal. Pairs/triads Choose a goal that you’ve achieved You were successful with this goal - with your partner, described the components of the SMART goal that you used Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound You were successful with this goal – with your partner describe the components of a SMART goal you utilized.

About 706,000,000 results (0.56 seconds) How to become a better teacher About 706,000,000 results (0.56 seconds) [Jen] Over the last couple of years, we have been wrestling with this question “how to become a better teacher” and as you can see, there are a lot of options, opinions and resources related to this question. This is overwhelming. Have you ever gotten great feedback but hte three negative comments stick in your head and become your focus… With that in mind, we hope to guide you in a direction for and efficient progress towards yo

Self Reflection Which domain do you feel is a strength for you? Which two domains excite or intrigue you? [Jen] Where do you start if you want to become a more effective instructor? The TEF is a starting point for looking at the different domains of teaching…

Framework for Developing Teaching Effectiveness – page 2 Read the descriptions of the two domains you chose and narrow them down to one. [Jen] [Handout the whole Framework] Find the 2 domains you chose on the Framework. Read through them and narrow goal choice to one. NOTE: They can choose any 2 domains, not limited to Classroom Climate or Instructional Strategies.

Goal: Improve classroom climate so that students feel safe enough to share ideas even if they make a mistake. SMART Goal: Integrate at least three opportunities for students to interact with each other every class so that they feel more comfortable participating on a regular basis. [Tonya] Read the goal: What is this goal missing? In pairs, revise the goal to make it SMART. Realistic, Relevant, or Rigorous

Goal-Setting Form Your choice: Review the sample goals or begin to write a SMART goal for your teaching. [Jen] Discuss blank goal-setting form and the departments that have already started using it. Talk about results of that: Feedback and Assessment as a goal, align with professional learning at CSU/TILT [Handout goal setting form and 2 Sample forms filled out] - take notes on it… -Classroom Climate -Instructional Strategies (c) 2019 Colorado State University 2019 CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

Goal Setting Follow-up Set a date to check in with goal progress Share completed goal in two weeks Share contact information with Goal Mate [Jen] Suggest goal-mates check in with each other on their goal-setting process
