Fig. 1 The relation between age and average slope of deterioration in strength (units = lb/visit) across all upper-extremity muscles. A linear smoother is included to show the trend in the relationship between the two variables. This roughly translates to a strength loss of 4lb per year in polio survivors who are 40 to 50 years old and approximately 7lb per year in those who are 65 to 80 years old.
