Anti-Poverty The rise of the middle class allowed for the growth of suburban family. The children of the suburbs became aware of greater social issues affecting the poor and disenfranchised of America. Increase in incomes, meant increase in College attendance. Colleges became a place for people to meet exchange similar viewpoints.

Emergent Media New Television New Radio New Cinema

New Television Television became accessible to every household. Nightly Newsfeeds allowed for access to information. Information like Bloody Sunday in Selma allowed for nationwide sympathy and action to occur.

New Radio The growth of FM radio allowed for increase in musical tastes. Rock and Roll grew. Allowed for access to new ideas. Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll!

New Cinema Breakdown of the Hayes Code, stopped censorship of film. New Types of edgy movies were being played in cinemas. Allowed film makers to create realistic portrayals of life, and life situations.

The Vietnam War Major spark event. Gave counter culture protestors a rallying point to attack the government and demand change.

Major Events of the 1960-70’s

Woodstock, Monterrey Pop Festival, Etc. Music Festivals grow in popularity. Multi-Day Festivals with constant music. Held in large venues. Allowed masses of youth to meet and participate. Known for Rock ‘N Roll, Drugs, and Freedom of Sexuality.

1968 Democratic National Convention Protestors come to the Democratic National Convention to protest current President LBJ. Mayor Daley of Chicago ordered the Chicago Police to strictly enforce an 11:00 pm curfew. Violence broke out as Police in riot gear forcibly removed protestors. Protests continued, and the National Guard was called in. Violence escalated. Beatings and Assaults at the hands of cops continued.

Major Protest Groups of the Counter Culture

Students for Democratic Society Organization of College Age Students. Met to work on social issues including: race relations, enviromental issues, nuclear weapons, removal from the Vietnam War. At it’s height it had over 100,000 members.

The Weather Underground Violent wing of SDS. Responsible for several bombings and vioent protests. Haymarket Memorial Bombing (Blew up a statue). New York City Arson (Molotov cocktails thrown at a judges house) Dynamite at the Police Station in NYC. Prison Break of Timothy Leary. Bombing at the Women’s bathroom of the Pentagon.

Yippies (Youth International Party) Students organization started by Abbie Hoffman. Got its start in the Civil Rights movement. Fought for end to the Vietman War. Also fought for freedom of drugs.

Chicago 8 Members of the Yippies were essential protestors of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Eight Members, including Abbie Hoffman, were arrested and tried for conspiracy to start a riot.
