THE CORRELATION BETWEEN NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER AND SOCIAL MEDIA USE Alyssa Kimberly Zulueta Psych

HYPOTHESIS: There has been a rise in narcissism with the increased use of social media, but social media alone is not to blame. It is how social media is used. Constant use of social media is unhealthy and is detrimental to the mental health of an individual. Not everyone who has a social media account is a narcissist. Social media in of itself does not cause an individual to become a narcissist.

INTEREST IN THE TOPIC: I want to learn more about personality disorders because it is one of my favorite topics. I am fascinated with personality disorders. Studies show that there is a link with how many selfies one take and narcissism. This is why I want to look further into how social media is affecting mental health.

ON NARCISSISM: AN INTRODUCTION  Pathological narcissism was first described by Freud, who has a long, rich and complex history in the literature of psychoanalysis.  Freud (1914) is concerned with the problems of relations between the ego and external objects and on his paper ‘On Narcissism: An Introduction’ was a starting point for many other contributors to the theory of narcissism, including Klein, Kohut, and Kernberg. HEINZ KOHUT: SELF PSYCHOLOGY  Kohut suggested that some degree of narcissism could actually be healthy and beneficial to a person's relationships with others.  The narcissist remains stuck at the infantile level, displaying many of the characteristics of the omnipotent and invulnerable child (Kohut, 1977).

QUESTIONS:  What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder?  What causes Narcissistic Personality Disorder?  What are the signs and symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder?  How does social media use affect mental health and does it contribute to narcissism?
