Seal of Biliteracy

What is it? The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given to students who have attained proficiency in English and at least one more language by high school graduation.

Why is it important? Proficiency in multiple languages is critical in enabling one’s participation in a global political, social, and economic context and in expanding trade with other countries. “The benefits to employers in having staff fluent in more than one language are clear: access to an expanded market, allowing business owners to better serve their customers' needs, and the sparking of new marketing ideas that better target a particular audience and open a channel of communication with customers and businesses in other countries.”

Requirements World language (c)  Demonstrate proficiency in a world language through one (1) of the following: Score Intermediate-Mid or higher in all three (3) communication modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) on a world language proficiency assessment recognized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); Score three (3) or higher on an Advanced Placement world language exam. English (a)  Complete all English language arts (ELA) requirements for graduation with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher in those classes; (b)  Demonstrate English proficiency through one (1) of the following: Score three (3) or higher on an Advanced Placement English Language or English Literature exam; Score 22 or higher on the ACT Reading subtest.

How do I receive the Seal of Biliteracy? SCENArio 1 – I am a senior and ... I have At least a 3.0 GPA in the ELA classes required for graduation; I scored three (3) or higher on an Advanced Placement English Language or English Literature exam; OR I Scored 22 or higher on the ACT Reading subtest; I took the ap world language exam (Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Latin) during my sophomore or junior year and scored a three (3) or higher. Congratulations! You will receive the seal of biliteracy.

How do I receive the Seal of Biliteracy? SCENArio 2 – I am a senior and ... I have At least a 3.0 GPA in the ELA classes required for graduation; I scored three (3) or higher on an Advanced Placement English Language or English Literature exam; OR I Scored 22 or higher on the ACT Reading subtest; I have completed at least 2 years of world language and I don’t have AP scores as of today. You can still receive the Seal of biliteracy by taking the aappl / Alira exam in March.

What should I do next? If you would like to receive the seal of biliteracy and all you are missing is the world language score, You should attend one of the informational meetings AND register for the AAPPL / Alira exam as soon as possible.
