Have you seen these before? What do they have in common?

POVERTY: what is it? When we think of a person living in POVERTY: what do we imagine?

Watch this video, and think… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-PvTqo1gX0 Imagine YOU had to live on less than 2 euro a day to live on… what would your life look like? What sort of opportunities would you miss out on, what would you have to do without?

Why are some countries so poor? Poverty History; e.g. colonialism (e.g. Ghana) War and political problems (e.g. the Congo) Poverty Lack of development (e.g. Bangladesh) National debt (e.g. Zambia)

Have you… Two pairs of strong shoes A warm, waterproof coat. Had a day out for entertainment Had family or friends for a drink or meal once a month Two pairs of strong shoes Have you… A warm, waterproof coat. Replaced worn-out furniture Bought presents for friends/family once this year New clothes (not second hand) Gone without heating Eat meals with meat, chicken, fish, veg every 2nd day

Then: why poverty in Ireland? Stagnating wages Cost of living Why are people poor in Ireland? Unemployment Lack of welfare

Watch this video, and think… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DVJev6pw7Y Why would it be difficult for a person living on the streets to escape poverty? Why do you think rates of addiction are higher among people living in poverty?

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs Poverty and inequality are present in all nations of the world, even in ones considered rich or DEVELOPED (like Ireland!) Poverty is more than simply a lack of MONEY; it is a lack of OPPORTUNITY.

For after break… If you were to write to the Irish government to suggest some ways they could combat poverty, what would you suggest? Come up with two or three possible solutions/ways.
