Perkins Reauthorization Background Reauthorization process began in 2004 House and Senate approved legislation overwhelmingly in July 2006 President signed into law August 12, 2006 Public Law 109-270 Reauthorized through 2012 Association for Career and Technical Education

FY 2008 President Bush’s Budget On February 5, 2007 President Bush released his budget for FY 2008 The Administration proposes a 50% cut in funding for the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act education programs The Administration also proposed elimination of Tech Prep funds within the Perkins Act Association for Career and Technical Education

FY 2008 President Bush’s Budget Department of Education funded at $56 billion (huge cut) Department of Education budget would eliminate or consolidate a total of 45 programs Department of Labor budget cut as well Some funding for new initiatives Association for Career and Technical Education

FY 08 Budget and Appropriations House and Senate Budget Committees passed budget resolutions in March Both assume increases in “Function 500” education, training, and social services programs House has slightly higher discretionary spending cap Final budget resolution approved late Thursday -- appropriators can begin work Association for Career and Technical Education
