Close Reading: 1. What is being said. 2 Close Reading: 1. What is being said? 2. What is the underlying meaning of what is being said? 3. What literary devices are there, if any, and the effect of each? 4. What do you notice about the syntax? (Syntax: the structure of a sentence) The house on Mango Street is ours and we don’t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn’t a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it’s not the house we’d thought we’d get (Cisneros 3).
