The Lost Message Remember when Friar Lawrence said he would send someone to tell Romeo about the plan? Well that was Friar John’s job. Friar Lawrence welcomes Friar John back from his trip and asks him about Romeo, the letter, and how everything is in Mantua. What does Friar John say? Well, about that... He was going to go with another friar, but because the other friar was in a town hit by the plague and officials quarantined the house leaving them stuck inside and unable to deliver a message. This explains why a servant was able to reach Romeo before someone with a message from the friar. Friar Lawrence then is concerned. He knows the contents of the letter, he knows how important it was to get that news to Romeo, and he never received it. Friar John reveals that he has been holding onto the letter this whole time and he gives it back to Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence reveals that it is dangerous that the letter has gone unreceived and how he has to take matters into his own hands. What is he to do?
“I am almost afraid to stand alone” At the start of our scene we have Paris and his servant standing around the Capulet tomb where he is paying his respects to the woman who would have been his wife. His servant is to keep watch. Paris states “I am almost afraid to stand alone here in this churchyard” This might be an example of what literary device? As Paris is scattering flowers at the tomb he says things that reveal that he might have actually cared for Juliet. While he is in the process of doing this, his page lets him know that someone is approaching the tombs and they hide. It is Romeo and Balthasar! Romeo explains to his servant what his plan is. What does Romeo say? Romeo gives him a letter he is to deliver his father and says that he wants to see his wife’s face one last time as well as take “a precious ring” from her. He tells Balthasar to not interrupt him or stop him during any part of his plan despite how “savage, wild” and fierce it may seem. Does Romeo sound like he is thinking straight or is he blinded by love or sadness?
“Tempt not a desperate man. Fly hence and leave me.” Romeo isn’t the only one who wanted to pay Juliet a visit, Paris is there too. He recognizes Romeo and assumes that the reason Romeo is coming to the tombs is... Paris thinks that Romeo has visited the Capulet tomb because he intends to disrespect the dead bodies of Tybalt, Juliet, or any other Capulet that lie in the tomb so he decides he needs to stop Romeo. We know something the characters don’t. This is dramatic irony! Paris thinks he is there to do something terrible to the bodies, Romeo just wants to see his wife one last time. Paris tells him that he needs to stop or he will die. Romeo admits that he is there to die, but begs him not to try and stop him. Paris refuses and the two fight. Romeo is the winner and ends up killing Paris. Paris’ servant goes to get the authorities. Paris makes a dying wish. What is it? Paris wants to be laid to rest near Juliet and Romeo says that he will. It is then that he notices who Paris is and the mistake that he has made because he remembers Balthasar talking to him about what was happening in Verona!
“Death, that hath sucked the honey of breath, Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.” Romeo opens up the tomb where his wife has been laid to rest and is amazed at how beautiful she looks even in death. He lays Paris down next to Juliet as was his final wish. Romeo, acknowledging where he is, apologizes to someone. Romeo apologizes to his cousin and says that he hopes that he can forgive him for what he did by murdering the person who killed him. Romeo once again admires his wife’s beauty and now believes that even death has fallen in love with her and keeps her trapped. “Shall I believe that unsubstantial death is amorous and that the lean abhorred monster keeps thee” Romeo kisses Juliet and takes out the poison. He is going to do it. He takes the poison, kisses Juliet once more and dies. Who enters the scene after this happens? It’s the Friar!
The Friar is too late The Friar enters the churchyard and runs into Balthasar who was with Romeo. Balthasar lets the friar know that Romeo was here to see Juliet and immediately runs to the tomb. “Fear comes upon me. Oh much I fear some ill unthrifty thing. As the friar goes through the tomb to get to where Romeo is he notices the aftermath of what just happened. “Alack, alack, what blood is this,” Friar Lawrence approaches Romeo and what happens? Juliet has woken up from her deep sleep, but the friar has no time to explain what has happened. Remember Paris’s servant called for the authorities and the friar heard a sound. The friar gives Juliet one offer. What is it? Before the friar leaves he tells Juliet a quick recap of what just happened and that she can come with her to live the life of a nun, but she ultimately refuses and stays in the tomb.
Reflection What might happen as a result of these deaths? (Hint: You already know) In 3-5 sentences make a prediction about how these events will play out.
