Expository Writing: Part II

Expository Writing is…. a type of writing that is used to explain, describe, give information, or inform. The text is organized around one topic and developed according to a pattern or combination of patterns.

Sample One: As a class, we are going to read a sample paper. As we are reading, highlight or circle the following parts of the essay. LABEL EACH ONE. Hook Thesis Key points/topic sentences (in the body paragraphs) Re-worded thesis (in the conclusion) If you have different colors of pens and highlighters, consider color coding these parts of the essay. 

Sample Two: With someone sitting near you, read through the second paper and repeat the activity Highlight or circle the following parts of the essay. LABEL EACH ONE. With your partner, write a thesis statement for two of the following prompts! Use the provided handout. Explain the meaning of bravery. Explain the importance of failure. Explain the effects of stress. Explain the value of hope. Explain the sources of pride. Explain the difficulties in trustworthiness. Explain the importance of having a good friend. Explain whether it is important to laugh. Explain the importance of never giving up. Explain whether it is better to work by yourself or with a group.
