What’s New About Kindergarten? Kindergarten Back When Kindergarten Now Teachers use the TEKS to teach a structured curriculum that includes all the core subjects. Students learn through play and structured academics/activities (fun) Most Children will leave Kindergarten reading and writing words and simple sentences Kindergarten includes learning social skills, routines, and procedures We encourage the children to be as independent as possible Students are assessed individually throughout the school year We still have fun, just in a different way! *Making friends/Socializing Play all day inside and out Lot’s of crafts Coloring, cut, and paste Took Naps Learn Alphabet ½ Day We had fun!!
Academic Prep for Kinder Encourage curiosity to ask questions Read and enjoy books with your child Teach them to respect others Teach and help your child understand the concept of listening and following directions Help your child to recognize their name, colors, shapes, letters, numbers, and sounds Phonological awareness is a predictor of reading success. Practice writing letters, numbers 1-10, name
Prepare Your Child in Advance Begin talking about school and easing any fears they may have Be excited –it’s contagious Start meeting friends and scheduling play dates Let them be a part of choosing their school supplies/ school clothes Start giving them chores and making them responsible We don’t want this...
What to Expect on Day 1 Meet in the cafeteria Confirm transportation Trust that they will be fine Go enjoy breakfast in the library (Tears and Cheers)
The first three days… Your child will not officially be assigned a specific teacher, but they will rotate through all of the kindergarten classrooms. By exposing all kindergartners to all kindergarten teachers and classrooms, all of the teachers will become familiar with all of the kindergarten students. Your child will be assessed on basic concepts and behavior. Using the information collected, our campus administration will facilitate the kindergarten team in creating classroom groups which balance the academic and social strengths and needs of our students. What can the parents do? Please do NOT send a backpack or school supplies with your child until they have been placed in a permanent class. If you send a lunch box or money, please label it with the students first and last name.
