OTHER ROAD USERS (Sharing The Road With Others) Ms. Maday/Mrs. Adler CHAPTER 8 OTHER ROAD USERS (Sharing The Road With Others) Ms. Maday/Mrs. Adler

Pedestrians Pedestrians have the right of way at all intersections There is a crosswalk at every intersection, even if it is not marked as such Look for signs to mark school zones, bus stops, playgrounds, parks, and other places people might be. Watch for movement around parked cars.

Pedestrians and the Law Failure to yield at a Crosswalk: License suspension Points Fine Jail time Community Service Pedestrians who fail to obey signals: $54 fine $22 for those under 17 y.o. Pedestrians & Joggers should always face oncoming traffic

Mature Drivers People are living longer so more older drivers on the roadways. Retesting for drivers may be required after a serious collision or medical problem Myths and facts about senior drivers: Part 1 Elderly driver licence debate - YouTube

Visually Challenged Persons Have a white or metallic walking stick, or are accompanied by a guard dog They always have the RIGHT OF WAY

BIKES, SKATEBOARDS AND OTHERS Bicycle riders, skateboarders and inline skaters have same rights as motorists You must always yield to them when turning right. A Bike rider, Skateboarder, or inline skater may use the left turn lane as motorists do to make a left turn at an intersection.

Motorcycles Same laws govern motorcycles that govern automobiles Slippery, sloped, or uneven surfaces as well as objects in the roadway present challenges. Failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is most common cause of motorcycle accident. GEICO Motorcycle Safety Video - YouTube

Mopeds Horses and Animals Can dart into road at any time; trying to avoid it may cause an accident Watch for signs, stay alert, and be prepared for the unexpected. When passing a horse-back rider or horse drawn vehicle, reduce speed to 25 mph Speed limit of 25mph Must follow all traffic signs and signals Have same rights and responsibilities on the road

Trucks, Tractor-Trailers, and Buses When passing, remember there are several no-zones where the truck driver cannot see you. Truck Smart Module 1: "No-Zones" (Blind Spots) - YouTube During adverse weather conditions, a truck can take as much as 25% longer to stop than usual.

TRUCK NO-ZONES REAR NO-ZONE -up to 200 ft behind a truck. If you can’t see their side mirrors, they can’t see you! Do not tailgate or remain sandwiched b/t two trucks. FRONT NO-ZONE 10-20 ft in front of truck. Do not cut in front of a large truck on the roadway. SIDE NO-ZONES do not stay next to a truck’s cabin. They cannot see you if they change lanes. Trucks make wide turns. Trucks may roll back a few feet on a hill when starting up again Video-Truck Smart Module 1- May Trucking Co. 2008

Yielding to Buses You must yield to any bus or school bus that is re-entering traffic after making a stop. Once they are back with the flow of traffic, you do not have to yield with them changing lanes.
