JLEIC Engineering Status T. Michalski June 15, 2017 F. Lin

JLEIC Interaction Region Status: R&D Plans for SC Magnets Proposal, schedule and budget for TAMU Model Dipole completion IR Magnets – collaboration with BNL IR Magnets – TOSCA designs at JLab (Started) LDRD Proposal for 6T SC Dipoles and 3T Fast Ramping SC Dipoles Design and Layout IR Layout – initial layout – awaiting further detail on magnets and vacuum pipe design requirements Tunnel size and cross section validation – underway Staffing

TAMU Model Dipole Plan for using supplemental R&D funds to complete the design of the model dipole during FY’18 Testing cannot be afforded until FY’19, based on supplemental R&D budget TAMU anxiously awaiting funding to get things started Further details from Peter McIntyre

IR Magnet – BNL Collaboration We have assessed opportunities to collaborate with BNL on aspects of the IR magnet designs Focus will be on higher field magnets – looking at Nb3Sn as the conductor Preliminary assessment is there is an Ion Ring FFQ which has similar requirements for both JLEIC and eRHIC Plan to review requirements in FY’17 and start concept design Neither lab sees this fitting into FY’18 supplemental R&D funding

IR Magnet – TOSCA Modeling Paul Brindza has completed a first design of the SB1 dipole – working to get it modeled in NX (CAD) Renuka is working on QFFB1, with preliminary results

SC Magnet LDRD Probir has submitted a LDRD focused on: 6T SC dipoles for the Ion Collider Ring Needed for 100 GeV center of mass energy Alternate technology solution to SF magnets for 3T fast ramping dipoles for the Booster Ring 3T slower ramping dipoles for the Ion Collider Ring Based on R&D Committee recommendations – insure we have backups for SF magnets Will collaborate with LBNL on LDRD

All views are from above IP Purple – Electron Final Focus Quads Red – Ion Final Focus Quads Green – Spectrometer Dipoles Brown – Detector solenoid and anti-solenoids Rectangular & Red – PEP-II HER Quads Rectangular & Blue – PEP-II Dipoles First cut has a variety of “trouble spots” which need to be addressed

Design and Layout Site layout with all available rings exists Adding tunnel, based on FML dimensions and cross section – in process, awaiting further MD availability IR Layout – adding details to IR magnets in NX as information comes available – in process, awaiting further MD availability Adding PEP-II RF Cavity to layout – expect more space behind the beamline is required

Staffing Engineering staffing has been spotty, at best Lab priorities have delayed moving staff to JLEIC SC Magnet Engineers – Hall B Solenoid LCLS-II Cryo and CM requiring bulk of MEs and MDs Anticipate adding the following staff in the next 4-6 weeks ME – Mark Wiseman – focus on IR (mechanical layout, cryostating FFQs, etc.) Magnet Engineers – Renuka Rajput-Ghoshal – focus on modeling IR magnets Probir Ghoshal – LDRD and SF Model Dipole MDs – beamline layout, IR layout, IR beam pipe
