North Carolina School for the Deaf The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD), established in 1894 is a day / residential facility for the education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. It is located on a beautiful and historic 160 acre campus in Morganton.

NCSD officially began operation in October 1894 with an enrollment of 104 students. Since 1894, school enrollment consistently has been over 100 students with a peak number of 642 students. Since 1894, the school has graduated 1,867 students for an average of 17 students per year. Governor Morehead School for the Blind The Governor Morehead School, North Carolinas school for the blind, opened in 1845 as the North Carolina Institution of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind. It was the eighth school for the blind in the United States and one of the first in the South.

The GMS campus has a total of 75 acres with a total of 28 buildings, with an approximate total square footage of 260,000. GMS (the School) encompasses approximately 125,000 square feet in 14 buildings, of that total. Other agencies occupying the balance of the buildings include the Wake Young Womens Leadership Academy (WYWLA), Office of Rural Health and Division of Services for the Blind (DSB), which includes the Rehabilitation Center for the Blind which is a residential program. Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf opened in 1964, and currently serves the 53 easternmost counties in North Carolina.

ENCSD serves deaf-blind and multi-disabled students. Specialized deaf-blind intervenors help their student learn to interact with their environment to become more independent. Multi-disabled students learn real world job skills in the sheltered workshop program and in off- campus work experiences.
