Fuelwood data from the Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire Working Group meeting of 22-23 January 2014 Marilise Wolf-Crowther, Environmental statistics & accounts; Sustainable development

Roundwood production The two main categories of annual roundwood production are Industrial roundwood: sawlogs, veneer logs, pulpwood and other industrial roundwood Fuelwood or "wood fuel": logs, chips and particles, but NOT wood pellets

Fuelwood Fuelwood data are very much underestimated in most countries Some countries run household surveys and estimate much higher numbers now than in the past, e.g. France, revised the whole time series Other countries have similar percentages of fuelwood to roundwood as in France and this seems plausible Eurostat financed household surveys and other studies in 2009 and 2010, but the JFSQ data have not improved

Conclusions Very low numbers overall Experts think the estimates should be at least 25% higher in Germany This could also be the case in other countries, since fuelwood consumption has probably increased everywhere due to the high energy prices

Thank you for your attention!
