Four Different Communicable Diseases Four (4) different communicable diseases that were discussed in Chapter 34

Chicken Pox* Common Cold Head lice Pinworms List of Diseases Chicken Pox* Common Cold Head lice Pinworms

Means of Transmission Chicken Pox* (deaths only reportable) (varicella zoster virus) Direct or indirect contact, droplet, or airborne secretion of infected person

Means of Transmission Common Cold (upper respiratory infection - URI) Direct or indirect contact with infected person

Means of Transmission Head Lice (pediculosis) Direct contact with infected person; indirect contact is rare

Means of Transmission Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) Direct transfer of eggs from anus to mouth; indirect contact with eggs in clothing, bedding

1. Chicken Pox 2. Common Cold 3. Head Lice 4. Pinworms Incubation 2 - 3 Weeks; 13 - 17 days 12 - 72 Hours; 2-7 days 1 week (nits or eggs hatch) 2 Weeks (matures) 3 weeks - 3 months 2. Common Cold 3. Head Lice 4. Pinworms

Is when you're starting to feel the effects of the communicable Symptoms: Is when you're starting to feel the effects of the communicable disease Tip Use standard precaution and universal precaution. Universal Precaution - CDC Standard precaution-i.e. Hospitals, daycare

They can be anywhere on the body. Several crops , may develop over several days… Loss of appetite or feeding problems. Tip Remember. If something sounds like common sense, people will ignore it. Highlight what is unexpected about your topic.

Common Cold (upper respiratory infection) Symptoms Coughing Sore throat Runny nose Sneezing Headache Temperature (fever) Tip Remember. If something sounds like common sense, people will ignore it. Highlight what is unexpected about your topic.

Head lice (pediculosis) Symptoms Itching of scalp; presence of small, light-gray lice and nits (eggs) at the base of hairs Tip Remember. If something sounds like common sense, people will ignore it. Highlight what is unexpected about your topic.

Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) Symptoms Anal itching Insomnia irritability Tip Remember. If something sounds like common sense, people will ignore it. Highlight what is unexpected about your topic.

Treatment Chicken pox* Bed rest Topical antipruritics Common cold Rest Decongestant Mild analgesics Increased fluid intake Head lice (pediculosis) Topical use of 1% lindane shampoo Lotion or cream (7-10 days) Comb nits from hair Launder washable items in hot water with hottest drying cycle Dry-clean or seal in plastic bags nonwashable items (2 weeks) Thoroughly vacuum the environment Pinworms Anthelmintics Initiate scrupulous personal hygiene Shorten fingernails Launder washable items in hottest or boiled water

Protect the Patient. As a medical assistant there's a simple way to stop the transmission of diseases with quarantine methods and make sure others unprotected persons do not come to contact infected person Tip Use precautious at all times whenever you're in public places or institutions

Protect the Staff. Common cold may be a little bit tougher to quarantine as it is Airborne and much easier to catch versus pinworm a good precaution is to where I go goes in a face mask and gloves and also make sure that the air is clean around the patient and anyone who has a auto immune deficiency must be must stay away from the patient

Protect the Staff. A good technique transfer of head lice one of the best techniques to do is to wear a hairnet and also make sure other staff is very aware of the patient having head lice and also to make sure any persons that have come in contact with the patient with head lice is to be checked out immediately by a doctor to ensure they do not have the disease.

Additional Method to Prevent Communicable Diseases Transmission must constantly wash your hands if you are in contact with an infected infected patient it is a great idea if the patient gets any body fluids on you Leave to cleanse yourself, put on new clothing this also helps stop the transmission of disease among co- workers and other patients. Overall, it is always good to use PPE personal protective equipment and standard precautions. In some cases; you may have to use universal precautions in more drastic measures. A medical assistant: you must be clean
