What is Web 2.0? Basically the 2nd generation of the World Wide Web Allows for more collaboration and sharing of information rather than just static web pages Often called the “Read/Write” web Examples include blogs and wikis, plus social networking and video/photo sharing sites and more

Why Use Web 2.0? Great way to get students engaged and motivated in practicing writing skills Great tools to create ongoing conversations among students Creates “always on” learning communities that extend beyond the classroom

Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0 Static web pages No collaboration involved Corporate web sites No collaboration involved Dynamic pages that are constantly being changed and updated Allows for real-time collaboration outside of the classroom

Examples of Web 2.0 Tools LiveJournal Google Docs Edublogs Springnote WordPress Blogger Wikis Wikispaces PBWorks Collaboration Google Docs Springnote VoiceThread Presentation Prezi Glogster Social Networks Edmodo

Blogs in Your Classroom Provides ease of access to an online “journal” format Allows students to record their writings while facilitating instant feedback from others Blogs provide a space where students and teachers can collaborate together on projects Offers a mix of voices Ways blogs have been used in the classroom AP English Language Math Social Studies

Wikis Wiki What? Basically an “editable” web page Typically multi-authored documents (like Wikipedia) Tends to focus on the final product while authors are anonymous Both blogs and wikis support the process of discussing and sharing ideas among students

Collaborative Tools Google Docs – Create and share your work online for real-time collaboration. Can upload and share documents, presentations, spreadsheets and more. SpringNote – Online notebook for taking notes and sharing with others VoiceThread - collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).

Presentation Tools Create maps of texts, images, videos, PDFs, drawings and present in a nonlinear way using Prezi. Glogster - Combine images, video, music, photos and audio to create multimedia pages. Embed into any webpage.
