Presenting someone else’s words, key ideas, or research without appropriate and complete acknowledgement Word-for-word plagiarism Plagiarism through paraphrase Pocket Guide – Chapter 1

Paraphrasing Stating the thoughts of another author in your own words. (Pocket Guide, pp. 6-8) Misattribution Unintended plagiarism; oversight in mechanics (citing), omission, or incorrect information.

APA Style: Overview Finding Sources Traditional Library Books Periodicals – magazines and newspapers published at regular intervals Journals – magazines and newspapers dealing with a particular subject Electronic Library Articles (website), newspapers, e-books, personal or government websites. APA Style: Overview Finding Sources Check your source using the 4 C’s Credibility – verify credentials and expertise of author(s) (i.e., field of study, education, etc.) Collegiality – verify how well the selected work is situated among other common sources in the research area; does a grounded argument exist? Currency – does the selected work represent an awareness of recent and ongoing research? Context – is the content of the selected work relevant to the essay topic?

There are two methods for using parenthetical citations Enclose the author(s), the publication year, and the page number(s) in parentheses Paraphrase – (Locher, 2002); (Locher & Eyman, 2006) Quotation – (Giannetti, 2005, p. 4) Introduce the source directly in the text Diamond (1999) claims… Jones and Baker (2016) asserted…
